Certipost simplifies electronic legal signature

Aalst, 27 June 2007

Certipost, the joint venture of Belgacom and The Post, specialised in secured electronic document exchange, launches its new e-Signing service. This service will facilitate electronic document exchange. Companies, organisations, individuals and administrations can from now on use Certipost e-Signing, to sign in a user-friendly way whatever file they want, knowing that electronic signatures have the same legal value as handwritten signatures. Electronic signatures are not only legal but they also yield considerable time and cost savings. Furthermore, they are respectful of our environment and concerned document are easily digitally archived.

With the online support of Certipost, the sender can, in a few clicks, electronically sign a document using a professional certificate, that he can buy in Certipost’s webshop (www.certipost.be/webshop) or using his/her electronic identity card (eID). The professional digital certificate or the eID establish the identity of the signing party and associate this identity to the signature. The sender can electronically forward the signed document, for example, by email.

The addressee receives the signed document in his personal mail box. Thanks to the online application, the receiver can check whether the signature is valid and whether it has been modified after the signature of the sending party has been affixed. The receiver can on his turn sign the document and send it back.

Usage of the e-Signing service is subject to a fee for the sender/signer and is free for the receiver. The sender can purchase the needed amount of credits of for his signatures and can immediately start sending electronically signed documents.

"A European directive and the Belgian legislation govern usage of electronic signatures" says Vincent van Quickenborne, State ‘secretary in administrative simplification. "Except a few exceptions, such as signature of a will, an electronic signature has the same legal value as a handwritten signature. The electronic signature is capable of considerably reducing the loads of administrative papers."

"With e-Signing, we offer a tool which simplifies the technical complexity of electronic signatures" specifies Stijn Vander Plaetse, CEO of Certipost. "We can see a constantly increasing demand for such simplifications. More and more data exchange occur using electronic channels. Think of for example VAT declarations or of deposit of annual accounts. Electronic signatures can become very interesting as from the moment we talk of exchanging business mails, emails, contracts, orders, etc. Based on open standards, our e-Signing offers the easiest method there is in what concerns signing and exchanging whatever electronic documents."
